Hello

I still have an early production Gold Bug with the double "8" style extension cables. I will only say I gave found an "amazing amount" of gold with it.

I communicated with Mr. Johnson back when it just came out. For those that have the GB-1, try running it in the middle toggle switch position if possible as it is my understanding that is what it was designed for. (My phone conv. with Mr. Johnson was about 1988)

In Autotune I also feel it can be beefed up; but I will also mention it runs great in moderately mineralized ground and outperformed its early competition in alkali.

I have all three coils with my GB-1; early "8" wire.

I also have found the Compass Gold Scanner Pro with the DD coil to be very effective. It operates at about 14 kHz. I learned to use the VDI meter, very helpful.

I still have a Garrett "black pushbutton" Coinhunter Groundhog, a VLF/TR which operates at about 15.8 kHz. It is of 1978 vintage. Have three coils for it. I found my first nugget with it on a hardrock mine dump and then started to effectively hunt old drywasher tailing piles as at this time gold had jumped up and everyone was out slugging the constant air drywashers.

While I'm at it, the Garrett Scorpion is a "sleeper." Back about 10 years ago I found nice grain-sized gold with it in the contact-metamorpic ground in Pinto Basin area. I found it to be the most effective in some of the areas of magnetite.

Nearly thirty years ago, in a conversation with Roy Lagal he predicted the DD would eventually be the most popular coil design. It was Don Dykstra, then at Compass that designed the DD and used his initials "DD" since it resembled two DD's back to back. I have always perfered the DD over a concentric as it was better in mineralization. (Also, the Compass Challenger was the first to have an auto-tune pot.)

I have concentrated on using the LST--- I find it best to learn one machine, as it is operator skill, and have found it a good, simple, rugged, all-around choice. It is about 17-18 kHz.

I'm not surprized that the manufacturers are finding 14-20 range most effective. Mr. Jack Lowery predicted this over 10 years ago and I believe him right.

However, over the past three or so years I have been leaning more toward the PI-types. I saw some impressive finds being made with the 2000 in the volcanic areas assocated with epithemal type gold-silver residual and hillside "eluvial" type placer deposits within the cordillera, and I bought a 2200d.
