Gregg, living in Porterville you can easily hit the various Sierra Nevada gold areas to the east of you, or drop down to Tehachapi Pass and hit the Randsburg area in the desert. The best value in books about Sierra Nevada gold areas is Morrison's "Placer Gold Deposits of the Sierra Nevada." This is the prime time to detect in the desert; no heat, and the snakes are gone. But it is always best to do the "buddy system" routine. There is a very active prospecting club in Taft, joining it will give you access to good claims, and maybe find a partner or two. The pamphlet "Gold Nugget areas in Southern California" highlights all the spots to search south of Bishop. I publish it. Get a good book on the subject of nuggetshooting; the four top authors on the subject are Jim Normandi, Jim Straight, Larry Sallee, and this humble respondent. With the MXT in the desert you can find flakes as small as 1/4 grain with the 950 coil, and as small as 1/10th grain with the Mini DD coil. Hope this helps; May all your "golden dreams" come true.
