Subject: Sure, you can balance the machine to the rock........ BUT
In reply to: jim straight 's message, "Re: "Hot Rock" controversy: More: By their definition---??" on 12:12:12 07/07/02 Sun

Once the rock is taken out of context (the background mineralization), then it can no longer technically be called a "hot rock" or "cold stone". These terms are only attached to the rock in relation to the underlying matrix, with the "hot rock" having a stronger positive signal and the "cold stone" having the stronger negative sgnal in relation to the background mineralization level.

One little trick I've seen used to slightly "off-balance" certain auto-tracking machines is to find a rock that is slightly positive or negative to the underlying background (depending on how you want to tune the machine), and then "balance to the rock" with it held in the air in the auto-track mode. Once "tracked to", the machine is then switched into "fixed" or non-tracking mode, and holds the GB point of the rock, rather than the slightly stronger or more negative background. Have seen a couple of pros just absolutely eat up an area north of Lovelock using that method to pick out bird-shot sized bits by the hundreds.
