Hi Trapper,

I am fairly certain I know which dredge tailings you are talking about. A couple of people who researched them indicated that the dredge was only about 60% effective so much of the gold went over the side.

There isn't a lot of information that would indicate there were a lot of really large nuggets found in that location. However, it is possible that there were some or the gold that may have gone over the side was still trapped in a quartz matrix.

Now, one of the techniques used I know of for searching those piles was to search in the areas where it was obvious the rock wasn't "washed". In some cases, much of the overburden was simply dug up and tossed to the side before the actual serious dredging was done.

A couple of friends of mine look for those piles where there is a reddish clay/rock matrix that doesn't look like it had been washed. Such piles are part of the large long trail of rocks. They then rake down the suspected piles and search carefully.

As for finding nuggets just in the piles, several years ago an individual told me he just bought a detector and when to those piles to try it. Well, he found one spot where he got several indications. The first four or five were 22 casings but the next was a nice quarter ounce nugget. So, they are there to be found.

The big problem will be getting permission to search them. If you have this overcome, I would recommend you give it a shot.

Good Luck,

Reg
