Hi Steve! I' ve also noticed the same thing about how a lot of the books relate to one particular detector and how to make it work where it really isn't the best for the job. The three I use the most are a GMT, an XT18000, and an SD2200D. If I could only have one detector I'd probably choose the XT18000 and get a WOT coil for it (for larger deeper nuggets) or I'd get a GP Extreme if I could afford it or I'd get a GB2 or Goldmaster if I was in small gold country. I hunt many different places like you and there are many places where one will work so much better than the others. It would be nice if one detector would do it all but the honest truth is like you said "There's no such thing as the best nugget detector!" The best advice is to see what the locals are using successfully in the area if you can. Watch out for BS! Just observe what is being used by the successful nugget shooters if you can.
