Subject: Who owns more than one nugget detector?

Hi All,

This post is a follow-up for the "favorite detector" post.

I've been re-reading all my nugget detecting books. What is interesting is how they almost all focus on one model, and try and explain how to use the model in areas that fight the units tendencies. Larry's "Zip-Zip" book is my favorite book, but he goes into great depth on how to try and make the Goldmaster work in ground it really just does not work well in.

That is great if you have a Goldmaster (I do) but my answer is different. Use a different detector! If my Gold Bug 2 or GMT starts to choke on the ground, out comes my SD2200D.

If you hunt only one particular area, then there is usually a detector that suits that one area just fine. But if you get around a lot, you may find those places where your "favorite" detector just does not shine like it did before.

I feel like a guy should have a sharpshooter, like the Gold Bug 2 or the Goldmasters, and then either a lower frequency VLF detector or a Minelab SD/GP series detector.

Now I'm probably opening up a can of worms, and guys with GP Extremes will say it does it all. For sheer versatility it's hard to beat the XT18000. But my personal use has shown the GB2 and Goldmaster's are tough to beat for the little stuff.

So until the day comes that the magic "do everything" detector is invented, I'll be packing at least two units. Even if you discount my feeling that the extremes are better addressed with multiple units, there is always the insurance policy of having a backup machine if one quits for any reason. For those once-in-a-lifetime trips that is reason enough to own two detectors.

The manufacturers would sure like us all to buy two. Sales would double. Hmmm... maybe that is why there is no "best" detector!
