Basically, that's true. The high frequency units have more problems with ground and hot rocks. Extreme sensitivity is a two-edged sword. The very properties that make the machines hot on tiny gold bring a few problems.

But in capable hands the Gold Bug 2 and Goldmasters can handle some pretty bad ground. In my opinion the Goldmasters are way ahead of the Gold Bug 2 in this regard, particularly the new GMT with it's automatic ground balance option.

There is a spot north of Anchorage where the bedrock is composed of graphite laden slate. Every IB (induction balance) detector I've tried has severe problems with it, even the XT18000 in 6.4 kHz mode, but my Gold Bug 2 in particular goes berserk on the stuff! It is basically worthless at that location. My SD has no problem with the stuff.

I've had very good luck with the Tesoro Lobo ST in bad ground, particularly with the 11" DD coil. The 11" DD is not quite as hot as the stock coil, but does smooth out the ground response very well.
