Hey Paul, a prospecting career is not an easy road, even here in Western Australia. The hardest would be finding alluvial gold ( nugget hunting ), the reason for this is that there is no continuity to it, sure you can take a lot of the guess work out of it now whith modern technology but it is still a little hit and miss. In my opinion the easiest and most profitable way long term is to have a little hard rock mine.... you know the grades, you know how much ore you have to crush and you know your costs and returns. The only down side is that it is like a real job and bloody hard work, and you don't get the thrill of the chase that you get "chasing the weight". I suppose it also depends on your domestic situation, if you don't have too many responsabilities then it is a pretty good way to live. I did it for a living for about 20 years and I starved twice in that time, but in all the gold was good to me, I still know lots of people that make a good living from it. Take care and good luck with what you decide to do.
Matt
