Subject: Making Lemonade

As many of you know, the lion has been waging a personal battle against that hooded figure who seems wont to stand in our doorway beckoning with his bony finger.

The lion was handed a few more lemons this week, but we made it home to savor the lemonade he made with those lemons and Dr. Doom was told in no uncertain terms that the lion does not plan on going with him any time soon.

I watched the lion accept news the doctors didn't want to give him, then I watched as he joked and teased and made them laugh. There a new-found respect and appreciation in the doctors' and nurses' eyes as they prodded and poked and stuck him with needles so long that if they'd stuck them in me, they would have come out the other side. They laughed when he threatened to table-dance in his gown and as he did the hokey-pokey and a tango in his wheelchair. A few cowered in fear when he growled about food items on his tray that we couldn't name by sight or smell. The night shift nurses grinned as we handed them a bag full of ice cream cups purchased during the lion's only excursion off the floor that didn't involve some new test, CAT scan or Xray, and he was prepared, if necessary, to defend me from the security guards who seemed to want to stop me every 50', demanding to know who I was, why was I there and the full name and birthplace of my great-grandmother's uncle. The hospital was on the same high alert as the rest of the nation and it isn't much easier trying to move around there than it is to get through an airport unmolested by security these days.

We are not exactly smiling and laughing here in Smalltown, as it appears that the lion has now begun what might be the toughest fight of his life, but fight we will.

We will make another trip this upcoming week for more tests and it's very probable that will be the story every week or two, but although the fat lady may be doin' her warm-ups, she ain't singin' yet, so keep posting and keep the lion in your prayers.
