I just don't think I've ever enjoyed a funeral more than I did Miss Elisabeth Smith's! (There was no Z in her name....) Her younger sister (younger than 90) gave a talk about Miss Smith who had many names......Libba, Bubba, Liza, etc. Every member of the family had a different name for her. They told how she painted the entire family home.....a two-story house with gables, and the newspaper came out and took a picture of her hanging from the roof, just a'painting! One time she took a piano apart, put the keys in a box and sanded the wood and stained and varnished it, then put it back together and it played perfectly! She and Miss Davis were together over 55 years and they grew vegetables, made pickles, jams and jelly and shared everything with their neighbors and family. She made many trips to see her family and got a ticket for going 59 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. Of course, she talked the police out of giving her a ticket!
Miss Davis was there, though in a wheelchair. She had a fall and is in the rehabilitation part of the hospital, but they allowed her to attend the funeral. I told her that I knew that she was going to miss Miss Smith and she said, with tears in her eyes, "I miss her already." There were many former students including Marvin Anderson, Barger and Eleanor Moss, Willie Hughes, and Ann Dewees Morris. Those were just the ones I saw as I was in the back at the organ. The only other teacher I saw there was Dot Moore. Everyone enjoyed the grand reunion, but no one would have enjoyed it more than Miss Smith. She was a very different lady than the one I knew who TRIED to teach me math. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to really get to know her even though it was at her funeral.
