Subject: Getting I/o error when installing programs...

I am getting an "I/O Error" when I try to install programs... Then a message says "This may occur because of corrupt media file or bad installation file" It is VERY annoying... and I can't install some of my favorite things... I am running windows 2000 now but i got the same problem when running windows 98 se... ive actually gone to the trouble of reformating several times to fix the problem... Is there something that i can get to fix this or is part of my hardware messed up?
im running amd athlon xp1800, geforce 4 mx420, 512 ddr ram, epox main board.... any idea where the problem is coming from? would a new harddrive help? Im desperate, help!
