Hey man, I am getting the same crap when I try to install some of my programs directly from the hard drive, but mostly off of a cd. I have been reading around and others like us are saying that it is either caused by bad ide cables that our hard drives and cd-rom drives use to talk to the mobo, or a bad motherboard itself. In my case, it cant be the bad motherboard because i just bought mine brand new. I think the problem lies within the cables.
