Subject: Week Seventeen: 5K Race!

Instead of a 10-mile recovery run this weekend, I ran my first 5K race on Saturday morning! (5K = 3.1 miles) I went with one goal: to enjoy the experience.

The Prince George's Running Club's Women's Distance Festival was held at 8:00 on Saturday morning. I got there about an hour early, because I didn't know how long it would take to register. Turns out it was a fairly low-key event, with around 70 runners. About 10-15 of us were first-time racers. I was a little nervous before the run, but the nerves went away the second the race began. From then, it was just like any other run.

I didn't run all-out at top speed, but I did run about 2 minutes per mile faster than my normal pace. I was having a little pain in my hamstring (the result of the 20-mile run last weekend), so I didn't want to push things.

The only notable part of the run was running in the rain. That was my first time to run in a downpour. While it kept things cool, the humidity made it a little tough. Overall, the 3 miles passed very quickly (you know, as opposed to 20 miles). The finish chute was the best part of the race. The crowd support was fantastic, and between the bright ribbons and the timeclock, it all felt very official. :)

Speaking of time, I finished in 41 minutes. I'm not exactly thrilled with that, but it wasn't a terrible time considering I wasn't pushing myself. I know I'll do better the more races I run. I do plan to run more races after the marathon. It was a lot of fun...and I liked the goodie bag we got (race t-shirt, face cleanser, and scented talcum powder).

Plus, watching other runners being awarded medals made me determined to win my own medal in the future. I'm nothing if not fiercely competitive.

Next week we have another 10-mile recovery run scheduled. I'll be on vacation, so my next update might not be until after the 23-mile run in 2 weeks.

Caren
