Subject: Week Five: 7 Miles

Well, I have come to a realization. No matter how many power bars, power gels, or power mantras one uses, running is just plain old *hard*. :-)

Ran 7 miles this past weekend! I ran with a faster pace group, so it was a little bit tougher run than I'm used to. It's funny to think that in a few months, I'll think of 7 miles as a short run.

It's starting to get more challenging now. The weather's warming up, it's getting humid, and the runs are getting longer.

I made a few adjustments to my routine this week. First, I tried out something called "Body Glide," which is a lubricant that protects against blistering and chafing. It comes in a deodorant-like stick. As distances increase, and depending on whether it's raining or the runner is sweating a lot, chafing can really be a problem. Women are prone to chafing under there armpits and against their bra lines. Men usually chafe their nipples (known as "runner's nipple").

I also experimented with Power Gels for the first time. Ewww. They are truly disgusting. They're liquid gels about the consistency of pudding or gel toothpaste that are mainly made of carbs and sugar to give a quick boost when your body has exhausted its resources during a long run. They can put a man on the moon, yet they can't make those gels taste good.

I'm happy to announce that I've passed the $500 mark in my fundraising! Thank you to everyone who has donated! Your support is wonderful!

Next week: 8 miles
