Subject: Herb Poltice

Either oregano or thyme, in dried leaf form. Garlic- either crushed cloves or garlic oil. Calendula flower petals. Salt- about a cup to 2 quarts of water. I simmer the garlic in the water (if using cloves) for 5 minutes. Add the dried oregano or thyme, and the Calendula petals- also dried, but fresh could be used. It's less messy if you put the dried herbs in a tea bag, or a tea ball- or even a muslin handkerchief tied into a small bag.
Soak the affected part of the body directly in the solution- as hot as you can stand it- but test it with a *healthy* part of the body, first, because bad swelling or infection can cause skin numbness where you wouldn't notice that you were burning the skin. If the problem is on a part of the body that doesn't lend itself to sticking it in a bowl, soak a piece of flannel cloth and use it as a compress- or make a poultice by soaking oatmeal in the solution, making a large "bunch" of it in a pillowcase, or piece of muslin- whatever works- and hold that on the problem.
We did this with that very nasty toe and even I was amazed when the following morning the inflammation and infection was totally GONE. Just slightly wrinkled, peeling skin from the fever and swelling, but soft, pink and painless.
We often refrigerate the solution and reuse it (for the same problem- over a period of a day or so) but NEVER if there is any drainage or other pollution of the soak solution. Use common sense.
