Defense Against the Dark Arts
Sparkling Sapphire
Hi everyone! I have no time because of the dreaded approached of September the
4th, a date that will ruin my writing and on line time until late June. This is
going to be quick because I have to run out to buy some stuff and study for my
Learner's permit test. I don't want to drive for some reason. I don't know
why but I don't want to, I keep picturing myself crashing into trees or poles.
In other words I am ready but I want to review for a while.
If anyone wants me to e-mail them leave your e-mail and who (Professor Gwen Figg
or Arabella Peters) to talk to. There won't be a lot of homework until the
trip is over but I do need to make up a new student list so I do need everyone
to leave there name/house/year please. It helps with grading and I don't think
I have everyone. This is going to be a short lesson and we get to see another
creature.

The woods had become more beautiful as they ventured into it. The trees were
tall, as if they had lived for all eternity here in the wood. Dark green and
golden leaves hung on the trees and were scattered on the forest floor. As the
sun streaked through the tall tress the leaves seemed to glitter, the bark
itself almost looked like silver and gold but would change as you moved. At
least it appeared that way. A small stream ran through the wood. The water was
clear as if glass and stones sparkled within.
"It's beautiful," Joanie said her voice like a whisper.
"Right now we are at the border of the waterfall. It is beautiful but it is
also deadly. Remember to keep your eyes open for anything. Watch where you step
and watch your surroundings. If you see anything remember to tell either myself
or Professor Lupin." Professor Figg went on.
"Professor!" Neville Longbottom shouted, the whole class turned towards him
with their wands out. The tension which had veiled over them like a thick fog
was laughed away as the class stood face to face not with a horrid creature but
instead a small, white, floppy eared rabbit. Neville turned red and muttered
under his breath something that sounded like "she said to tell her if we saw
anything" and then he melted back into the group.
"I didn't know that there were bunnies here." Eva Goyle said, bending down
to look at the furry creature.
"This is a normal forest with magical additions. There are birds, rabbits,
squirrels, pretty much everything here." Professor Figg waved her hand to
their surroundings.
"What about ferrets?" Ron Weasley added and watched as Draco fist paled and
then shot him a deadly look. "Opps, sorry I nearly forgot. There is a
ferret." He pointed in the general direction of Malfoy, "right there."
"Ron!" Professor Figg said and he gave a stupid sort of smile, letting the
matter drop. Sapphire gleams seemed to flash off of the pond. "This is a good
place to examine a few different things; I think we will explore this area a
bit. Now let us just say that this bunny was a deadly creature who can tell me
what I would do with it?" The hands shot up. Both Grangers, Eva, Amy, Becca
and a few whose faces she couldn't see clearly. "Yes Becca?"
"You could throw an apple at it, knock it unconscious and then go get the
apple back." The class laughed and Erin as well as Hermione raised their hands
again.
"Ok, Erin?" Professor Figg went on. Hermione looked rather put out on not
being called on. Professor Figg made a mental note to ask her another question
soon.
"You could use a repelling charm that way you can get away and do not harm the
creature." Erin finished.
"Very good. Now who can tell me-" She was interpreted by a gasp from the
class. Something had flown in front of them. All of the girls' hair waved back
and a sparkle of sapphire glittered past them. "what that is?"
"A draft?"Neville said. Professor Figg felt bad for him and decided that if
she pretended not to hear his remark the others might not have noticed his
comment.
"We're outside Longbottom!" Rajah said. "Besides, it's a Billywig."
This answer mixed reactions. Both professors were happy with smiles plastered
across their faces; most of the Slytherins were torn between surprise and joy.
Rajah wasn't stupid, far from it. She was one of the smartest in the school
but she wasn't one to answer questions too often. They were thrilled with the
look on Hermione's face though, she looked rather depressed. The Gryffindors
were just plain surprised.
"Yes it is a Billywig. Very good Rajah. Now Hermione, can you tell me about
the Billywig." The girl looked overjoyed.
"Yes Professor. The Billywig is an insect native to Australia. It is around
half an inch long and a vivid sapphire blue, although it's speed is such that
it is rarely noticed by Muggles and often not by wizards until they have been
stung. The Billywig's wings are attached to the top of it's head and are
rotated very fast so it spins as it flies. At the bottom of the body is a long
thin sting. Those who have been stung by a Billywig suffer giddiness followed by
levitation. Generations of young Australian witches and wizards have attempted
to catch Billywigs and provoke them into stinging in order to enjoy these side
effects, though too many stings may cause the victim to hover uncontrollably for
days on end, and where there is a severe allergic reaction, permanent floating
may ensue. Dried Billywig stings are used in several potions and are believed to
be a component in the popular sweet Fizzy Whizbees." Hermione ended with a
smile.
"Walking textbook's uses words like ensue." Ron was muttering.
"Very good Hermione. Very good indeed." Profess Figg said smiling. Professor
Lupin was smiling at her side and the Gryffindors looked thrilled. They had
shown up the Slytherins. "Before I continue, is anyone allergic to Fizzy
Whizbees? If no one is then you are all most likely to not be allergic to
Billywigs." No one made any motions. "In that case does some one think they
might be able to catch one? We could look at it up close in that case." Harry
and Draco were already scanning the area for a Billywig. They felt the rush the
usually had for Quidditch and the competition was there. Soon the majority of
the class was hopping around, trying to catch the elusive creature. Harry and
Draco soon learned that catching something on foot was far from catching
something on a broomstick.
"You do remember the spell to catch one don't you?" Remus asked Gwen in a
whisper as they watched the group.
"Of course I do. I'm giving them a chance to act like kids. When do we get
to run around like that and not feel embarrassed? Never. They have a purpose and
thus they can embarrass themselves all they want and nobody can say a word
because they are doing the same thing." Gwen answered.
"Ok, I'll buy that. I just don't think you know the spell." Remus said
in no more than a whisper. The students were running around, laughing and
bumping into one another. The Slytherins were helping the Gryffindors up and
vise versa. They found that it was hard to hate a group while chasing a bird.
You were too busy with the chase. Draco and Harry were coming close but just
when it was within their grasp it would give a burst of energy.
Samantha Riddle meanwhile decided to sneak off for a bit. She needed to unwind
and think without hearing her friends yelling as they dove for the creature. She
snuck off behind one of the trees, out of the sight of the others, except for
Snuffles. He noticed her leaving and from a distance followed her to an adjacent
glade. Samantha was sitting on the ground, leaning on her elbows and looking up
thought the trees. The sun shone on her face and she closed her eyes, trying to
relax. The flashbacks had really gotten to her. She lower herself and laid on
her back for a while and listened to the sound of the brook, she was far enough
away from the group and was sure she could catch up before they noticed she was
gone. If they caught the Billywig at all that is. She felt something change but
she didn't know what it was. The harmony of the area seemed to be off.
Something wasn't right. She started to open her eyes but a voice stopped her.
Samantha swallowed and closed her eyes; she needed to regain some of her
strength for this.
"Hello Samantha. How is my Dark Princess?"

I know that wasn't long but I feel that it was one of the better lessons.
Believe it or not that took a long time to write. Sorry about the cliffie but I
needed to end it there for a lot of reasons; time, plot line, etc. Any
suggestions/questions please leave in your homework. Just to remind you the
homework is to leave your name, year, and house. This is it. Easy right? That
means that everybody should do it. Please, I do need this so please, please,
please do it.
Now I would also like to say that everyone is welcome to owl me if they wish at
jediprins@aol.com (both Professor Figg and Arabella Peters are at this address)
in the subject bar please put this (I get a lot of junk mail and delete it so I
want to make sure I don't delete your e-mail) Owl Post To: Professor Figg
From: Your Name. If you have any ideas for the trip let me know and I will try
to add them into the plot that I have so far. Until next week!
~ Professor Gwen Figg
P.S. Just for fun, who can tell me what book and what place (in the book) gave
me the idea for the golden forest and the trees etc.? It's from another
popular fantasy book series.
