* The beautiful chestnut filly dances lightly to the trailer, then loads willingly. Mikki leads Mizz Perfection to the trailer, throws the leads over her neck and tells her "Load up" the black ex-racehorse steps right into the trailer and Mikki puts up the her butt-bar. Then he puts up the ramp and checks the trailer's hitch. Saddle finishes tying the two horses and they both got into the truck. Saddle carefully drove them over to the track, then they tacked up the two horses. Missy danced excitedly, remembering her racing days. "Easy, girl" Mikki tells her softly, tightening the girth. then he puts on his safety vest and helmet before bridling the excited mare. me looks at the racing saddle on the mare's back with the short stirrups. Mikki wasn't tall, only about 5'7, but he was too big to be a jockey. excersising racehorses was all he would ever be able to do, and he was glad he would be able to help his mom (Saddle) get Fantasy ready to race again. "Ready?" Saddle calls, bridling Fantasy. "Yeah, i'm ready whenever you are" Mikki calls. They lead their horses to the track and the officials help them mount their horses. Fantasy shies away and gives a few small bucks and Saddle expertly controls the filly. Missy trots calmly beside Fantasy for their mile warm-up jog, then they pick up a canter and ease the two horses into a slow gallop. at the gate they slow down and wait for the officials to help load the two horses into the gate. "Ok, Mikki, we're going to let them out for a furlong, no more. Missy hasn't raced in years and Fantasy still isn't back up to where she was. Let Missy take the lead starting out, keep her about a length ahead of Fantasy, then when we get about 3/4 of the way through the furlong i'm going to let Fantasy out all the way, just rate Missy enough to let her pass, but don't make it too easy" Saddle instructs. Mikki nods and Saddle raises her whip to the gate attendant. He nods and with a ring of the bell the gates fly open. both horses break evenly, then Saddle rates Fantasy and Mikki drives Missy until there is a length difference between the two horses. Soon they have completed half of the furlong, then 3/4 of the furlong and Mikki looks back to see Saddle driving Fantasy. The filly kicks in very slowly and Mikki slows Missy down to encourage the filly to run. Finally the filly starts to move and finishes the furlong with her nose in front of Missy's. then they rate the horses until they are in a slow gallop, then a canter, a trot and finally a walk. at the gate they dismount and lead their horses back to the trailer where they untack them and then walk them, hose them down, scrape the water, sweat and dirt off of them and make sure the two horses are completely cool before they load them into the trailer and drive off. "What happened to Fantasy out there, mom?" Mikki asks. "I'm not sure, she just didn't seem to have any desire to win once she got into a race situation. i'm not sure why, she's never had any bad experiences and she acts so spirited when she's not running with other horses." Saddle replies, sighing sadly. "I'll give her another week and see if she improves, if not i'll retire her" Saddle says finally. "No, you can't retire Fantasy!" Mikki exclaims "She's got so much potential, her times are so good! how can you even consider retiring her?" "Its simple, Mikki. if she won't run when she's with other horses its a waste of time and money to keep trying to train a horse that won't run" Saddle tells him. Mikki opens his mouth to protest, then snaps it shut again and they continue driving in silence*
