PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY

Many people are asking what they can do to stop Issue 1, the proposed amendment to Ohio's Constitution. One thing you could do is to talk to 5 people for 2 minutes each day and ask those people to do the same. This grassroots effort could have a big impact on the vote.

Here are some of the things you can say:

-- Issue 1 would not only define marriage as being between one man and one woman, it would also stop the state or any local government from creating domestic partner benefits and any other rights or protections. This would apply to both same-gender and heterosexual couples.

-- Issue 1 could prohibit Ohio courts from recognizing even private rights and benefits, such as corporate domestic partner benefits, contracts protecting medical decisions, and property rights.

-- Issue 1 is bad for Ohio economically. Cincinnati lost $45.6 million dollars from convention dollars after passing its discriminatory ordinance. Many groups and businesses have charter laws that state they "cannot convene in a city/state where there are any discriminatory laws." Ohio currently makes $28 billion a year in tourism.

If you want to learn more about Issue 1, you can go to opcpac.com and download their briefing document. If you are already working against this amendment, thanks and keep it up!

The extremist proponents of the antifamily and antibusiness Constitutional amendment have a big head start, but if each of us takes 10 minutes per day from now until the election, it can make a big difference.

Thanks for your help. Bev Caley
