There is a new anti-oppression group starting in Cleveland. We will be having monthly meetings to confront sexism, racism, homophobia, classism,and any other form of oppression through honest discussion of our experiences and feelings. Anyone from the area is welcome to plan and
participate in the group. We want this group to be serious, so don't come if you want to be goofy, pick up women, be controlling, or spit rhetoric. During discussions, we expect participants to be respectful,
confidential, and conscious of their own actions, and be able to hear
feedback without defensiveness.
Why we would like this group to exist:
- because oppression will not end as long as we are segregated and distrustful
- because acknowledging oppression is not enough -- we need to understand how we participate in oppression and learn how to confront that
- because cross-cultural interaction means understanding your own culture as well as others
- because racism is a white people's problem, sexism is a men's problem,heteronormalcy is a straight people's problem, classism is a ruling/middle class problem, etc. (but we can all work on all of these)
- because hatred and bigotry are on the rise, and we need to stand together
- because if we really want to change society we need to change each other

The First Meeting:
At the first meeting, we're going to discuss the upcoming speeches by Tim Wise (info below). Tim Wise is a white anti-racist author and speaker,who challenges systemic white supremacy (not the insidious acts of hate groups). We've picked three possible dates for the meeting:
Friday, Dec. 10th, 7-9pm
Monday, Dec. 13th, 7-9pm
Saturday, Dec. 18th, 3-5pm

as we know.
Planning Meeting:
There is going to be an open planning meeting this Thursday (Nov. 18th) at 6pm at Thwing Atrium on the CWRU campus (11111 Euclid Av., front entrance). We are looking for feedback and responses, in order to refine the plans for the group. We will also be discussing facilitation.
