I started first grade in Punta Gorda. Kindergarten was in Gainesville, but my brother Dick was Peggy Desguin educated when he came to Sallie Jones. We lived across the street from Kathy and Jeff Hindman (Joyce and Wilina)in the Wall Garden on the corner of Booth and Olympia. Sallie Jones'[ house was on the north west, caticorner. That house was later lived in by Bernie Mosley and family, and then by Judge Archie Odom and family and as the Brown Pelican Gallery. Her house is now razed, but I have the stair case, a window and some columns in the house I built next to my folks out on Burntstore Road.
The Wall Garden is now the emotional and drug rehab, emergency intervention center next to the physical work out center for Charlotte Regional Medical Center. All the Hindmans are gone from that corner. The funeral homes are still just around the corner and up the street. The side walks we trapesed to Sallie Jones School are still there in some fashion, there is now a light at Carmalita, and the school and cafatieria are still basically the same. The school buildings and layout are about to change; the entrance to the two story main building will be on Naranja. The existing buildings will be torn down (you can have a piece as a momento, send me your request and I'll coordinate it). The eucalyptus trees we planted on arbor day, in what year? 62, 63? are big and coming apart and being taken down. I remember ice in the ditch there near the trees, not when we planted but around the same time.
Who else had Ms. Pennington for first grade? Do you remember when the hair treatment was not right and she had green hair? For a couple of days? She spanked me one time when I did not deserve it might be why I'm reminding everyone of that hair thing. She has a very nice audobon sponsored, county donated, park named after her in Port Charlotte between Midway and Peachland just north of Sheehan.
