Philippians 2:1-4 If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. 3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
Christian fellowship and service is not a "me" thing. It is an "others" thing that is to be lived in meekness and humility. When we take the position that "I am just as good as anyone", we have left the lowliness of heart and mind that Jesus has tried to instill in us. Our work is to be a work of service. First our service is to be toward our Saviour and Lord. Secondly it is to be toward others. Not only is it to be toward our fellow man but it is to be done to the honor and glory of our Lord and not that we might be thought of as someone special.
Jesus gave us to understand how we serve Him through serving others in Matthew 25:34-40 where He instructed His disciples with this teaching: "Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."
The motto of the consecrated Christian will be "others" and this to Paul would fill him with joy. It would show his work was not in vain but had taken root, prospered and given forth abundant fruit. Our work is not to be for reward but to show forth the life of Christ in us. May our service to others always bring glory and honor to our Lord.
