Subject: How do you pray?

How do you define prayer? I'm curious. Do you look at prayer as a formal interaction where you read a standard prayer from the bible or a spiritual book? Do you look at prayer as a informal conversation with god? Do you envision prayer as communion in nature? Tell me your thoughts.

(In my opinion,) a prayer has almost nothing to do with religion, but everything to do with yourself. (By the way, I don't follow a particular set religion, but I do have my own system of beliefs that I follow.) To me, a prayer is sort of like an intense session of meditation - a way of getting closer to yourself through another medium. And the prayer's medium tends to be a God, Goddess, etc.

I'd never thought of it that way before, Teardrops, but that makes a lot of sense to me.

Personally I was brought up with the idea that prayer is talking to God, and as I got older the idea evolved a little from there, but that's at the heart of it. Communicating and communing with the Divine and all of Creation. That said, I approach it from different angles... usually for me it's sort of like mentally speaking up a bit to be heard. It's like there's a running conversation going with the different facets of the Divine in my head. I suppose that makes me crazy, doesn't it?

But I'll go outside and feel bliss and just beam back some of that joy, in gratitude for being able to experience it, and to me that's a prayer too. And creating... hm... to me it's like receiving a gift from the Gods and then making from it a new gift for them. Something like that. It's hard to put into words.

Very thought-provoking entry, by the way, and I adore the new layout.

Blessings,

I haven't been brought up in a religious environment, and organized religion has always mystified and bewildered me. I do spend a lot of time thinking though.. conciously paying attention to, and appreciating the world around me. I guess that if I addressed my thankfulness to a particular entity, that would be prayer?

I also treat my little part of the world as sacred.. I'm very particular about the placement of objects, even if that means arranging things to look as if they're carelessly placed (yes, I'm weird) your altar entries have left me thinking about that.. the idea of subconcious altars has me intrigued.

Religion, faith and belief are things I'm looking into at the moment, so I'll be interested to see what else gets posted here..

Best wishes,

ash.
