He was leaving the grounds when something fell from the branch of a redwood and onto his haunches. He snorted in terror and shied, bumping into another tree which sliced his barrel with a branch and drew dark blood. A dead tiger struggled to stand, moving toward Detruisent with a lolling tongue.

The stallion snorted again from rage and frustration, lowering his horn once more to battle position. "Putrid?!" His voice came out in an explosion of anger.

"I walk by the bodies of the dead." The tiger's body was newer to the land of the dead, his eyes were still there, shriveled and gray. They did not look at Detruisent.

The stallion did not speak. Demon! Of who? What did he want?

Laughter rumbled from the chest of the cat and shook the empty remains. "I am only Xeriwerif, no reason to be consumed by fear." It moved the tiger's body into a posture of submission.

"You are a demon. Did you not say you were under no authority of mine?"

"I serve you as an act of choice. My own free choice."

"Why?"

"You are The Conductor."

"I am Detruisent."

"Do you wish to be The Conductor?"

Detruisent said nothing. He moved toward It with aggression living in his eyes.

"The Syndicate to which I am loyal has decayed. The last Conductor was taken by the winner of the Final Fight. I have had no Master since then. You would build up a new Empire as the first Conductor?" The voice was not hurried by the threat of death at the tip of Detruisent's horn. It was a slow and quiet as ever, with a sharpness in the depths of it's monotony.

"That of which you speak is jargon."

"Aye, I will help you," hissed the spirit. "You direct the burning rage of young steeds to each other, and it will be done. Watch the destruction and reap the rewards."

Ceneri di Nerezza passed by his mind in warm images. "Conductors arrange battles?"

"Yes, Master, battles for the satisfaction of everyone."

Detruisent was interested despite himself. "Who fights? Why do they fight?"

"They fight for the rewards which you promise them."

The stallion snaked his head and took hold of the tiger's foreleg in his mouth, ripping it from the rest of the skeleton quickly before spitting the rotten foulness from his mouth. He could not allow himself to be interested, submissive to the information of the other. "I will destroy you."

"One hundred pieces of gold will be delivered to you," Xeriwerif went on, "for each tournament that is completed. Half of these will be a sufficient reward for the winner. You will set the rules and price for each competition. Your power will rise as the moons pass by."

"You promise what I desire. This is well crafted temptation. You are not to tell me what I will do. I will destroy you!" Detruisent laid his ears flat.

"What you desire is the same as many creatures alike to you, and is easily predicted. It is no matter. I have time. Another shall come, less skeptical." The corpse fell to the ground with a quiet thud. A darkness poured from his mouth. "The next time I see you, you will be fighting in one if His tournaments. Perhaps you will loose, perhaps I will walk by you, and then I will be your Master."

Frustration crashed against his patience like waves of the Gray Ocean. His heart pumped hot blood through his veins. He pranced in place, breathing slowly. "I will be your Master," he called into the fog, a voice hybrid of authority and submission.

A rattle replied.

"I will host a simple dual. My order to you -- find two creatures. Promise XXX pieces for the winner."

"I would expect more from you ... a dual? To death?" A stag moved gracefully behind him, and Detruisent spun 'round to watch with a careful eye.

"I am testing. A simple dual. Only to death if none surrender." He looked thoughtful. "Go now."

[> [> [> .appearance. -- Aswad, 15:22:00 12/20/02 Fri (205.188.208.165)

There is no plume of smoke, nothing spectacular to announce his arrival. He is simply there, where nothing was before. "I understand there is a duel to be held here." His voice comes suddenly and without warning, from behind Detruisent.

Nimble and terrified feet take him sideways and backwards and around in a moment of shied dancing steps. The trademark of heavy darkness settles around him again, as he faces Aswad, tucking his muzzle and pointing a threatening horn. Through blasting stallion's breath -- to intimidate the enemy, though he knew it wouldn't -- his memory conjures scenes of his Xeriwerif and the dual he agreed to conduct. So this wasn't a challenge.

He attempts to show more politeness, though it plainly wasn't easy for him, with this creature strutting there like a challenge in his face. "A dual, yes. Here, yes." He blows out violently again. Putrid had given him images of inexperienced, hotheaded colts, and instead here shows a seasoned warrior, almost frightening to look upon.

OOC: *cracks up* Aswad scares Trui? Now that is amazing! Now tell me, Chell, that you as a mun knew that Aswad would come? If you didn't know, then I will...I will...I will...I'll do something!

Expression remains impassive through all of this. Dial lowered briefly to acknowledge this. "I will enter." Claws dig small furrows in the bloodstained earth as he flexes them, wings fan slightly. His raven pelt shines with a sickly green light that can barely be called light, as though it were altered by the pure blackness of his soul. He awaits whatever Detruisent's response, more out of the knowledge that this is something one generally does than anything else.

[> [> [> [> [> [> ][ patience ][ -- Detruisent, 20:13:48 12/21/02 Sat (64.12.96.233)

The stillness of the rest of the world was pleasing as he shifted his eyes to watch where the Grounds met the forest. When he looked back to Aswad, the creature he would spend his next few days with, he felt strangely pleased. Detruisent had fallen apart so much with the passing year -- now things were coming together, slowly. It was a humble re-beginning.

"Do you know of any others coming?"

Dial shaken. "I do not. I am willing, however, to await an opponent for however long it takes." A wry smile appears on his face. "I have nothing better to do."
