My wife was 4 months pregnant when we visited Redang in 2002 September. Coral Redang Island Resort (CRIR) has boats with inboard motors. It means a quieter and slower ride lasting an hour and 15 minutes. We could see flying fishes with the slower ride, very comfortable and the funny thing I was concern with getting there quickly, looking back and the future, we now prefer a slower and more comfortable arrival and departure. No need to wear life vests! I made sure where they were just in case ;) And in 2002 October, the boat man avoiding a turtle and I was glad that he did, I could not imagine a faster boat reacting fast enough to avoid bumping into one of these turtles.

Most resort operates with speedboats. They are bumpy and fast, usually 45 minutes from Merang jetty to Redang. The super fast speedboat take even less time. I got this info from folks who been there. As for us, we had the speedboat experience in 2004 August to Lang Tengah and 2005 April to Tioman. Both experiences were so far from being memorable. Probably the ride on CRIR 'cruisers' spoilt us ;)

As for us, we had a very pleasant ride on CRIR 'cruisers' - going and returning. A welcome sight with the clear waters and a nice beach landing, a little wet though. My wife and I remember fondly of the boat approaching the resort - such a welcoming sight compared to our 2005 May jetty berthing with Laguna - but dry lading though.

CRIR is having major competition next door, what looks like a 4 star resort under construction. Resort is a little old but romantically rustic and nice staff and boat crew. This resort was known to cater for western tourists and it was so in 2002 from our observations. On both stays there (Sept and Oct 2002), I saw couples with very young children and a baby. The resort had provided a crib to the couple with the baby. We saw the baby playing by itself on the beach in water with the mother near by.

We have a two year old and this June will be her first visit to Redang, we booked with Laguna. We are traveling with my brother and sister in-laws and their 9 year old. I would choose something more rustic and isolated but our group would feel more comfortable with the usual hotel like amenities. Choice is yours. CRIR is still on my mind though. Only 40 units.

Hi Khairul. Will check with the resort - if I don't choose coral- if they can pick us up from Kampong jetty - do resorts normally do this? How long does it take to go from Pasir Panjang to Kampong jetty?

From the Redang jetty its only about 5-10 mins to reach Pasir Panjang. They do and some of them use the ferry exclusively. (meaning they don't transfer from merang).
