Subject: 1st time diving/asthma?? + genting/kl

Hi,
my friend & i will be visiting redang in august and we're interested in taking the padi open water course. the thing is, my friend is asthmatic and i'm wondering if diving is in any way dangerous if you have this problem?
also, does anyone have any tips or advice for us first-timers? (eg:what to bring, what to do/not do) :)
the second thing is ... does anyone know if there's a bus to Genting from KT? and how much/how long the trip would be?
we're really looking forward to the trip and i have to say that this forum and the website have been a big help!

Yeah, Alex's website is very comprehensive. Awesome write-up and reporting contents is well-rounded. Glad to see some folks are getting good stuff from his site.

Asthmatic.. that could be a problem. One has to be fit physically and mentally prepared. Being underwater has it moments where the air-flow gets cut-off, for example: one has to switch to the back-up regulator if it is a regulator problem, otherwise, one has to surface in a timing manner, and I don't quickly, just progressively to prevent the bends.

This may be redundant question: can your friend remain claim, composed and recovery all the time, anytime, anywhere on dry land when she or he suffers from an attack? If so, then ...

For beginners, best to check with a reputable professional dive center, ask them "What are the risks for an asthmatic person to take the open-water beginners course?". Expect an honest answer, nothing less - either way, they are gonna make your friend sign a wavier. That can help me make an important decision if I want to go ahead with the open-water dive course. Safety first, suba-fun is the second and bonus prize when suba-diving, snorkelling or even swimming in the open sea. Drowning experience? I been there before, don't like it one bit :(

There are coaches from K.T. to K.L., from Kulau Lumpur, switch to a Genting bound bus which is a short ride, an hour or so. I don't think there are direct buses to Genting from K.T. unless it is chartered.

There are different conditions that may bring on asthmatic attacks and different degrees of seriousness, from mild to chronic. Whether your friend can dive or not depends on her type of asthmatic condition. For example, exercise or cold-induced asthmatics, and those that require rescue medication should not dive, since diving requires physical exertion, and the water temperature can be cold (divers tend to lose a lot of body heat while diving).
