I don't think you should go cos the monsoon is going to be starting soon & the sea may get very rough. And they will cancel dives. It was already raining at the coastal area when I just got back from Redang (8-11 Aug02). While i was there on the last day, it was raining till abt 9am. then the wind began to pick-up & i could see the sea was very rough. I cant even go for canoeing.
Check the weather forecast 1st. The workers there told me monsoon is abt OCT - FEB. Of course the resort will tell you it is ok becos they want to earn yr $$$. The water will not be clear at least 1-2 week b4 or after the monsoon period. So don't get disappointed. Best time is Mid May- Mid Aug.
If you are

If you are learning, try RedangKalong package for 5D/4N at RM$1400. 3D/2N are too short even for snorkelling.

Yes I just came back fm there. (8-11 Aug 02).
Rooms - Very basic. Clean sheets, aircon, hot showers.
Makan - Good buffet by Malaysia standard. Usually abt 3-4 dishes + noodle/rich. (If you are not those looking good for resturant like 5 star Hotel). Anyway basically standard of food offered by all island resort are the same (except Bajaya Redang Beach Resort). Free flow of bread/tea/coffee 24hrs. Meals: BF,lunch, Teabreaks & dinner.
Service - Friendly. There look after guest personal needs. You don't have to walk out to sea to take the boat. There have little make shift jetty right up to the beach. Other I saw diver have to walk right up to waist deep to board the boat at long beach.
Site - basically you will have the beach for yourself & those staying there. Very quite. If you are stay at long beach, just imagine something like Santosa, with music blasting fm small bars everwhere, very commercialised. It was very crowded & nosiy when we walk over there to look see. They were doing some construction of new resort southern side of the long beach (just next to redang reef). So very dirty & nosiy during the day. May be another 6-8 mth or so by way it was going.
Of course sand at long beach is finer. Not much of snorkelling near the beach on long island. But at Redangkalong the coral start abt 10m fm shore. At abt 50-60m the reef drops to abt 2.5m & there are beautiful corals. I manage to see a green turtle, small & big (abt 1.8m) reef shark just off the resort itself.
My Friend who organise out-dorr trips like mountain climbs, dives & hikes all over Malaysia had recommended this resort so I think he had done his homework. I will be back to Redanykalong agin.
Please let me know if there is any comments abt other resort.

Buddy of mine came back from Redang end July and recommended to us that 2 nights is just not enough, 4 days and 3 nights "is just right" - that what he say to us. He said the first day and night is gone by the time you know it. Only left with a full day and night and the third day prepare to go back with little time to snorkel or do anything else.
