Subject: Places to eat on Redang Island

I am planning a trip to Redang Island in May 2003, and will probably stay at one of the Island Resorts. However, I do not want to be full board with all meals at the hotel, and would prefer to see a bit more of the island and what it has to offer. Can anyone recommend some non-resort restaurants ? Preferably also catering for Vegetarians ?
I am from the UK, and have also heard that it is difficult to obtain alcohol on Palau Redang - is this the case ?
