Subject: Laguna - Good or Bad?

My hubby n I treat Redang like a summer home. Our 6th time there in May. Horrified 2 c Laguna built up. Hope this's not the beginning of the end to the island. Why? Imagine another 800 people at the marine park! The ugly barge at the beach, the pollution people have been complaining to the Malaysian Govt abt. N the worst? They digged up a whole stretch of reef 2 build their jetty! R they mad? Was there really a need to destroy the environment? Nice rooms n stuff but do we really need it? We were doing jus great b4 Laguna got built. Can't blame people 4 being protective of this small paradise, u know? Gotta c it 2 know.Gotta love it 2 feel this sad. U decide 4 yrself. Sigh! Please, do yr part to take care of this island for wat joy it gives u.

Yeah, I heard about it. Saw the resort last year being built, what a mess.

If you have photos, can you post them to me or provide a link for all to see how the beaches are when you were in May. Appreciate it.

I will be going to Redang on 24 May 2003, seems like this is going to be bad. Last April, i went there, i am very disgusted by the barge being sighted there. As for the Jetty, i think it is worse. I ponder why they allow to have a jetty to be built there ?

It is a marine park, everything should be natural. Going there is to have fun. I personally support to have the beach landing for everyone, not to have jetty around. This is a always a memorable thing to do other than relaxing in the beach.

:~(

Is it possible especially the environmentalist petition to the Malaysia Government to step in and stop the construction.

Further, commercialization will means that more and more people will be discourage to visit the island after the island is being turn upsidedown.

i agree to ask Government to step in and stop the construction too. cause i jus back from redang at 9th may. The scene is big diff with last year i go there, everything change to be worst. its make me feel very disapointed. cause before i went to redang, the situation in redang in my mind is in last year scene that what a beautiful paradise it is n i'm shocked when reach there. It might become like Langkwi if no1 do something.

The resorts should work out a preservation plan for the island. In the long run, it will benefit them and the people who love this place.

Was there last Sep and going there tonite. Fundamentally, they have not sorted out the transport problem. They build a 500 rooms resort, but I wonder where's the infrastructure to support it...many a time, you want to made a trip down to Redang or other islands, the limitations is bus transport tickets. if that is not sorted out, the rooms will never get filled and the demise will happens.

It is going to be like Tioman. The housereef will have a difficult time to recover from the pollution. One way to have less people visit the island, especially on Pasir Panjang beach.

Imagine, there were 295 or so rooms in 2002 and 2003 has an additional 212 Laguna rooms and more rooms added to Redang Beach, a total of 543 guest rooms plus more staff quarters. Can Pasir Panjang beach substain over 1,000 people during peak periods? Surely the marine life will suffer with the demise of the coral reef.

It would have been better if Redang was not so well known to come to think of it. Too late now. It is up to the government and the Nature Society of Malaysia to get things under control.

You know, it amazes me to see how people treat the beach like a dump just because they're visiting and paying for their stay. Don't they know there is no clean up crew to pick up trash!?! Of course they know, they just don't care. Only the high tide has been carrying out the garbage to the open sea. With more people coming, in no time it will be like the beaches in Singapore, all dirty and murky. Man! It is so sad!

I still remember that Redang was a very peaceful place, not alot of people when i was there a few years back. Now, it is very crowded, if they are able to take care of the place. Then it is good. If not, too bad !

It will b a real pity/sad thing if redang really turns out tat way. Hopefully they would stop the building and digging and let the place rejuvenate...

I hate to see such a beautiful place ruin when i revisit it another time. Thinking such as "there are other islands like redang, so one lost is fine" should not b the way man! We should never take things for granted...
