I know lots of gay people who want to be gay. They are in strong relationships, unashamed, and happy My daughter is among them, and I couldn't be more proud! I am so grateful that she was able to grow up in a tolerant time and in a relatively tolerant community. She can walk down the street holding hands with her girlfriend, and they can plan a future and family together. Contrast that with some of my lesbian friends who are in their 50's and 60's. One of them told me recently that she didn't even know there was a word or concept for "lesbian" until she was about 30. She married young as expected. I don't know the details of her divorce but I'm pretty sure she caused her ex husband a heap of pain. We have each of us felt a version of that husband's misery, but there will be fewer and fewer of us precisely because people like my daughter won't do what several of my lesbian friends did. Or what my ex husband did for that matter! Unfortunately, there will always be unscrupulous people - gay AND straight - but I believe the normalization of gay relationships will eliminate one motive for entering into a MOM.
