All of these have to deal with Colombia, (they are either rebel/paramilitary groups(M-19, ELN, FARC, AUC), drug traffickers(Medellin and Cali Cartels...), or in the case of Choco, just a region in Colombia...)
267
M-19 The Movimiento de Abril 19 a group of National Popular Alliance radicals who broke from the NPA after the April 19th (1970) election in which the NPA lost to the Liberal and Conservative parties. One of several rebel groups at the time demanding constitutional reform, economic support for the poor and judicial reform, eventually renounced violence and became one of Colombia's parties, but eventually lost support.
268
ELN (National Liberation Army [Ejercito de Liberacion National]) One of the left wing rebel groups in colombia, started in 1965 and inspired by Castro and Che Guavera (and apparently receives some support from Castro) responsible for numerouse kidnappings, bombings, extortion. Negotiations with gov't officials have been tried at several points within recent years, but as of now no breakthroughs have been made. Areas of control in Colombia are the rural areas in North, Northeast, South and Southwest regions (along the borders)...
269
FARC Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Left wing rebel group, responsible for numerous kidnappings bombings extortion. Involved in the drug trade in colombia and recieves funds from the sale of coccaine (etc). Started with 'legitimate' claims representing the poor in the rural areas of Colombia, became a Marxist group during the 60's. Its modern incarnation however seems to be nothing more than a well trained group of thugs who are making quite a bit of money off of extortion and drug running. Little willingness to negotiate with the Government as most of the real revolutionaries were killed off by the AUC when they made a move to join the government.
270
AUC Paramilitary organization (right wing- counter revolutionary force) which was started in response to killings by FARC rebels. Like its left wing counterpart started with legitimate claims but has since become nothing more than an army of thugs. Involvement in the drug trade, extortion, kidnappings. Fights with ELN and FARC over territory.
271
Choco Region, (there is an accent over the second o) region of colombia on the pacific coast, site to recent conflicts between FARC and AUC, one such example being an attack by FARC rebels against an AUC town, a large group of civilians took refuge in the town church and they were followed in by AUC fighters taking shelter from the FARC, a bomb was then thrown in to the church and many of the civilians were trapped inside and died (I haven't really found much info on the region and that last bit may or may not be too accurate...). Region is resonably poor and is primarily a trade dependent area.
272
Medellin Cartel, once was the largest drug cartel of Colombia, however the leader Pablo Escobar was killed, and other founders were either killed (Gacha), or turned themselves in (Ochoa brothers), obviously was started and based in the city of Medellin.
273
Cali cartel, started in the city of Cali, not as flashy as Medellin cartel, not as large, and was started later on, however information supplied by the cartel eventualy led to the death of Pablo Escobar. The Rodriguez Orejuela brothers, and Santacruz Londono are the notable leaders of the cartel. Leaders however have been arrested and are serving 10-15 year terms in colombia.
