Emiliano Zapata-Reactionary general in Mexico; radical; symbol of Indian resistance and desire for land reform in southern Mexico; slogan was "Tierra y Libertad"; killed in 1919.

Francisco 'Pancho' Villa-Revolutionary general from northern Mexico who favored radical measures; joined the Madero revolution in 1910; he and Zapata occupied Mexico City in 1914-15; defeated by Obregon in 1915; killed in 1923.

Plutarco Elias Calles-Constitutionalist general and founder of the PNR (Partido Nacional Revolucionario); President of Mexico from 1924-28; plunged Mexico into its most severe religious crisis in history; continued to 'run' Mexico from 1928-34.

Lazaro Cardenas-Constitutionalist general; leftist; founder of PRM (Partido Revolucionario Mexicano) and President of Mexico from 1934-1940; expropriated foreign-held properties, distributed land to peasants, and instituted reforms to benefit Indians and Mexican workers.

Alvaro Obregon-Moderate/Constitutionalist; wrote constitution; President of Mexico from 1920-1924; enacted agrarian, labor, and educational reforms.

Pedro Carranza-Moderate/Constitutionalist; wrote constitution
