Autarkic development -- Latin America has failed to establish an autarky - or self-suffiency - as it relies almost solely on manufactured goods and already-established international trading institutions and policies for imports. Dependence on foreign capital illustrates this pretty well.

Cultural theories of development -- Theorists supporting the cultural theories of development argue that Latin American people inherited a "bad" culture from the Spanish and the Portuguese. The patriarchy and racial discrimination are a couple of these cultural legacies.

Racist theories of development -- This theory basically blames genetics for the Latin American people's inability to crawl out of their underdeveloped status. By this argument, skin color directly relates to creativity, fortitude, intelligence, etc.

"Protestant ethic" argument -- Studies provide some evidence that the Protestant ethic stimulates better economic success than the Catholic culture. Studies relate that Protestant converts became richer over a 20 year period than those who remained Catholic. Some aspects of these ethics include typical Protestant religions discouraging alcohol consumption, non-conformity to past precedents, and so forth.
