Valenzuela reading, pgs. 216-226:

In Chile, the Christian Democrats were seen as the middle road between Marxism and the status quo. The party led a large mobilization effort and in 1964 Eduardo Frei, their candidate, won the presidency. The party also had an outstanding showing in the 1965 congressional race. However, the Chr. Dems. didn't want to compromise with other parties, thus creating ideological tension and the loss of the election in 1970 to Salvador Allende, a Socialist.

After the coup on Sept. 11, 1973, the military set two goals: 1) destroy leftist parties and 2) restructure Chilean politics to make them more patriotic and to stop the bickering of the past. Pinochet moved quickly to become the leader of the junta and thus of Chile. General Leigh opposed Pinochet's rise to power but was removed from the junta.

The DINA was the secret police under Miguel Contreras, who eventually just reported to Pinochet (it reported to the whole junta in the beginning).

The Constitution of 1980 stressed national security over sovereignty and promoted military rule. It sought to ban leftist parties and create a "hyperpresidential regime."
