Big Mama- the ficticious matriarch in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's short story about the power structure in Latin America. She (might) symbolize the dominance of the the ruling class, their control of land, governemnt stucture and their ties to the Catholic church. Her death opens the possiblity for change, but challenges the idea that reform and the end of corruption are possible.

Corporatism - As an alternative to marxist class stuggle and dependency, this theory is seen as uniquely Latin American. It stresses the role of an authoritarian governemnt (or rganic state) to guide people and shape the community.

Dependency Theory - Incially proposed by the ECLA and developed further by Andre Frank, this theory asserts that Latin America's underdevelopement is due to and imballance between developed nations and satelite contries. It maintains that international trade will not lead to the deveoplement of Latin America (as modernist claim) but will lead to further dependence and hurt local industries and markets.

Core (I think this is the same as the cernter)- These industrialized nations benifit from a trade imballance which channels money and raw materials into their countries and exports finished producats to the underdeveloped nations. Over time, Spain, Protugal, England, and now the US have been labed as the center. Within a country, provicial capitals can also serve as centers, draining the area around them.

Perifery - According to dependency theory, these crountries (or rural regions with in a country) provide raw materials to the center and are forces to buy finished goods, thus creating a trade deficite. Frank claims that these countries became dependent on external markets during the colonial era, and since then local industry has not delevoped becasue of their contiued dependence. His claim that isolation from global trade would help Latin American countries lead to policies like ISI.
