Remember the basic tenement, range, gas mantle lighting, inside toilets, then came the improvements.
I can't remember what was on our floors, but it was a big event when the lino was getting laid.
Then came electricity and electric lighting, which lead on to radiograms then TV etc. Next big improvement was the kitchen sink being lined with aluminium, and at the same time, hot water gas geysers being fitted. Do I remember the better off getting sunshine windows fitted too? Round about this time bed settees were appearing, allowing the use of the "bed recess" for storage.
Next came every house getting new tiled fireplaces (mind the "Sofonas")with back boilers, and since the ranges were removed, room had to be found for a gas or electric cooker. Just about that time the evil plastic 3 pce suites, coffee tables and wall units were the rage, and I seem to remember fitted carpets making their appearance in the tenemements. The family dinner table went about this time, replaced by tv dinner style living. Then the hardboard and new handles fitted on all the doors, and much "boxing in" took place. Suddenly everybody had a sitting room. I'm sure there are many other fads that I've missed, maybe just as well.
