I was born in 45 Northinch street in Whiteinch in 1944 and have very vivid memories of my nine years of living there. Some of which I have read on this site, like "Lorry Hudgin'" "Dreepin aff dykes" wi' broken gless and bein' afraid o' dark closes where the mantles were a' broken fae the big kids lightin' there fags. We had a crazy wummin livin' oan the same landin as us who used tae throw the furniture oot the windie and her man wid pick it up aff the street and cerry it back up the ster just tae huv her throw it back oot the windie.(Mrs O'grady).
I used tae run fur the "Bookie" and get a tanner fur every line I picked up. Another job I hud wis sellin' papers at the Barclay Curls ship yard gates and doon at the diesel gates, (where ma faither used tae work,) Harry mcGarrity, (hamish) he wus the shop steward o' the diesel an' when he blew his whistle it wus "EVERYBODY OOT", strike time because the foreman had said somethin' nasty tae wan o' th' workers. He wis hame mair than he wus at work, or so it seemed.
We left whiteinch jist efter the coronation o' Queen Elizabeth and went tae th' drum, 1953 and stayed there 'til '65. I worked wi' Galbraiths Stores in Partick and Clydebank and Dalmuir West and done a stint "OAN TH' BUSES" before marrying and movin tae Canada in '66.
Canada has been a terrific Country to us but as always there's no place like Scotland and memories of growing up in and around Glasgow. We have been back for visits and still find Scotland an intriguing and friendly country and there are no people like Scottish People no matter what anybody says. I miss you all.
Note how the accent falls away near the end, Ive been domesticated, oh no
