Date Posted: April 06, 2003 9:22:49 EDT Western film star Anthony Caruso, who gained fame playing outlaws and gangsters, died Friday after a protracted illness. He was 86. His career spanned five decades and covered film, stage and television. He got his first break as a gangster in the 1940 film "Johnny Apollo". Typecast as a villain from his first film, he remained a reliable screen menace until the 1980s, said movie critic Hal Erickson. Caruso played an Indian chief in "Cattle Queen of Montana", with Barbara Stanwyck, and appeared in "Zebra Force," "The Oklahoman," "Never Steal Anything Small" and "Across the Pacific." He also made frequent appearances on the television shows "Gunsmoke," and "Bonanza". He guest-starred on "Get Smart" and "Star Trek" and "The Roseanne Barr Show". The Frankfort, Ind., native was also a horseman and a boxer, and his friends and family noted his talents in the garden and in the kitchen.
