Date Posted: April 06, 2003 9:32:56 EDT Bruce Bartley Walrath, an Army tank driver who turned to radio after he lost his legs in an accident, died Wednesday of emphysema. He was 68. Walrath announced at radio stations in several Southern cities. He was best known as an evening news anchor on Atlanta's WSB-AM Radio under his on-air name, Bruce Bartley. Bartley lost his legs in his 20s while he was stationed in Germany in 1957. Live electrical wires touched the tank he was driving, and the shock of electricity burned his legs, which had to be amputated. After he returned to the United States, Walrath worked the mike at a small radio station in Mississippi. He joined WSB in 1965 after disc-jockey stints in Miami and Gainesville. In the 1980s, Walrath worked as news director for WRNG-AM and WCNN-AM radio, where he also had his own talk show. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
