Subject: And one more thing...

In yesterday's post to Nitesh I expressed some very heartfelt opinions, but they were nothing more. Today, let me offer a bit of concrete advice that can prove invaluable in your future endeavors. It is essential for those with great ambition and the highest standards (ALL of you) to keep as many doors (read: opportunities) open as possible. Upon graduation from high school an infinite number of doors stand wide open. Choosing a given college to attend will undoubtedly close a few. Selecting your eventual major, deciding on a career and marrying someone are further examples of events that will shut more doors than they open. Doors standing ajar represent choices... opportunities... and are always good to have. So, when next you come upon a fork in the road, ask yourself which path keeps the most doors open.

Believe it or not, five years ago I had a really tough time deciding between Harvard and the Air Force Academy (I had blown off the pitt bulls, pussy cats and pine trees long before). In case you can't put two and two together, I chose the former because it opened countless doors while the latter closed quite a few. As mentioned yesterday, I very recently declined two military full-ride scholarships to the med school of my choice. A good deal? Definately. But I realized that pursuing medicine in the military placed certain restrictions on my future life and career. And so I opted to go into 200k+ debt in an effort to keep as many of those damn doors open as long as possible. One of my greatest fears was falling in love with some obscure specialty (insert proctology joke here) and realizing that, because of a decision I had made four years earlier, I was unable to pursue it.

OK, enough from me. I hope this provides a bit more food for thought. Rest assured, this will be the last bombastic dissertation you hear from me for some time. Back to being my mildly-witty self...
