Unit Readings:
"Change" section of the online training manual

Introduction:
Whenever a change or change process occurs, people are impacted by that change, either as individuals or as a group. It would be irresponsible to engage in the study of change without examining that impact. Most people do eventually adapt to change, but not without going through a process of transition. Bridges (1980) describes a change process that involves moving through the ending of something, into what he calls a "neutral zone," and then on to a new beginning. It is in the neutral zone that the significant adjustment to change occurs.

However, in many planned change processes, the neutral zone is ignored, and it is expected that people will simply move on. How many times are people told, after the loss of a loved one, that it is time for them to get over it and move on? The adjustment to change is a very individual process. That adjustment is something we need to be aware of and actively plan for so that we become empowered, rather than passive, recipients of change.
