I think that it is important that an RA sets an example of acceptance and kindness to other students in the halls. If an RA is mean to a particular student, others may follow suit. However, if at least one person treats someone nicely, it may prevent dropouts, suicides, all sorts of horrible things. I have heard so many stories about how one person's kindness has helped someone choose a better path for themselves. I also think that if someone else is paying attention to how you are doing, you tend to hold higher standards for yourself. For me, it was my parents, but not everyone has that support. By asking a simple question like "How are your classes going?" you may get someone to tell you that things are not going well, and then offer help such as tell them where they can be tutored. Whereas if you never asked, you might never know.
