Studies reveal that a reduction of risky behavior of MSMs in 1991 reduced by 90%. African American men account for 37% of MSMs in the United States (MSM = Men who have sex with Men).

The trend of HIV/AIDS over the past decade reflects a disproportionate burden of illness and dealths among the ethnic and recial minorities. While racial minorities make up 25% of the U.S. population, they are over represented in HIV/AIDS cases. As of June 2000, the total number of HIV/AIDS cases reported among African Americans is listed below:

People of Color account for 57% of the accumulated AIDS cases and 68% of new AIDS cases.
Men of Color account for 63% of new AIDS cases reported among males.
Female of Color account for 83% of new AIDS cases reported among females.
Children of Color Account for 84% of new pediatric AIDS cases.

The 1998 - 2000 study of over 2,000 MSMs age 23 - 29 found that 30% are African Americans. Only 1/3 of those infected knew they had HIV. In 1999, 13 - 24 year olds accounted for 15% of HIV cases and women made up 49% of the cases in this age group.

In the United States, African Americans have been severly affected by HIV/AIDS. The CDC and prevention has received reports that over 26,000 cases of AIDS among African Americans. Although this comprises over 1/3 of AIDS cases reproted since the start of the epidimic, African Americans represents only an estimated 25% of teh U.S. population. Research estimate that between 140,000 and 325,000 African Americans are infected with HIV. Approximately 1 in 50 African American men are believed to be infected with HIV. Of those infected with HIV, it is estimated that 93,000 African Americans are living with AIDS.

Note: Statistic reporting is from CDC and Prevention, HIV/AIDS Surveillance Report, Mid year, vol 12, No.1, and Year end edition vol 11, No. 2.

What are your concerens regarding HIV/AIDS?
