I've heard several similar stories, Coke bottle in the caddy, marbles in the frame, etc. I always thought they were "Urban Legends".
Just thought I'd post this direct from the Helm's manual :)
The VIN system:
Position 1- Country of origin -1,4 = US built
Position 2- Manufacturer - G = General Motors
Position 3- Make - C , T = Chevrolet truck , GMC truck
Position 4- GVWR/Brake system - D = 5001-6000 HYD brakes
Position 5- Truck line/Chassis type - T= Sm Conventional cab 4x4
Position 6- Series - 1 = 1/2 Ton Nominal
Position 7- Body type - 3 = 4-door/ utility
Position 8- Engine type - W = 4.3L V6CPI
Position 9- Check digit - ? = Check digit? (dunno)
Position 10- Model year - 1 = 2001
Position 11- Plant location - K = Linden, NJ
Position 12- Plant sequence number
