I can't say it was much of a difference, but I am still using the stock air tube (might be different with the FIPK). I do run an air cleaner and I figure if something big enough to damage the sensor wires goes through it will be doing more damage in the engine. I believe it is designed more to straighten the air flowing across the MAF sensor than to protect it. There may be benifits to removing it in the top end, by flowing more air (check out the Granitelli (sp?) aftermarket MAF sensors) , but I haven't done any testing at the dragstrip. IMO, if you want to remove it, be careful not to drop anything in there. If you don't want to remove it you're not missing out on much.
