Subject: A tragic loss

I was very saddened to hear that Shawn had passed away. I have lost a very close friend. I met Shawn in 1975 when he was just 12 years old. He was playing guitar in a local Memphis rock band called Typhoid. I remember being absolutely dazzled by his deft and accurate guitar technique. He looked like this sweet and innocent kid. They where mainly playing popular rock-n-roll covers of the day, but he was playing things that went way beyond most of the original guitarists solos. Since that day, I knew I had come in contact with someone very special. We became very good friends shortly after that. I’ve had the great privilege to see Shawn grow as a musician as well as a person throughout all these years. He was truly a Renascence man with a vast array of influences and interests well beyond just music. He has greatly influenced my life not only with his in-depth knowledge of music, but with his wonderful humility and humanity. I had the pleasure of working with him on a couple of occasions. He co-produced my 1992 recording entitled On The Way Home, which showcased his remarkable keyboard and arranging skills. I will miss him terribly, and the effect his loss has had on the musical community will be felt for many years to come. Shawn, may your spirit forever soar.
