HOLYOKE – WESTFIELD BIKE TRAIL? -- Robb, 07:09:23 06/02/02 Sun
I have long thought that if the old railroad which runs by Ashley were ever to go out of business, it would make a great bike trail.
A few days ago I noticed the rails are rusty and look unused, but I know there were sightseeing rides a few years back.
Does anyone know if this rail line is being used, and if so, for what? If it's NOT being used, are there are any rail-trail proposals?

ASHLEY'S CURIOUS CAUSEWAYS! -- Robb, 08:32:54 06/02/02 Sun
One of Ashley’s prime attractions has to be those curious causeways that divide the reservoir. I don’t have any official explanation for all of them but I can guess at why some of them exist.
If you look at the 1827 map of the Ashley area that I put up at <a rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://westmass.tripod.com/ashley.html">http://westmass.tripod.com/ashley.html</a> you see there are at least two ponds. By 1895 it looks like the water level is up and there are three ponds with two public roads going between them. Were there any dams built prior to the reservoir? There once was a large icehouse operation at Ashley which I assume predates 1895.
I suspect that when the main reservoir dam was built a few years later these roads were in danger of being flooded and the roadbeds were raised forming at least three, possibly four, of the causeways. As for the rest... anyone know?

Ashley Interested People
Forming a group by means of the NET or otherwise is a very good idea. Both myself and Mr. Phelim Ginty of Holyoke, are interested, as we daily walk the trails at Ashley and enjoy it greatly. One long term goal is needed in these regards: NO DEVELOPMENT. NONE. The water there should be a reserve for Holyoke, which is basically served by the Tighe-Carmody reservoir, built about 1954 - 1956.

Is Ashley REALLY Safe From Developers? -- Robb, 06:51:38 06/02/02 Sun
I have heard there was a proposal for the state to take over Ashley. My understanding is that it fell though. Just what they were proposing for Ashley, I don’t know. Can anyone fill me in?
But this raises the question: do we know for sure that if Ashley remains in the city’s hands that is FOREVER safe from development? I bet developers are absolutely drooling over the possibility of developing the area.

What worries me is that during hard times some developer will make the city an offer it can't refuse and they'll rationalize the sale claiming they no longer need Ashley as reserve.

About a week ago, a medium sized bear cub, about 55 pounds scooted over the gravel road, about 1/4 mile in from the Route 202 entrance. The cub was running quite fast, about say 15 miles per hour, and dashed into the woods running towards the large water tanks to the west, and we could hear it for about 250 yards, as it was crying for the mother. We waited there patiently about five minutes, and things quieted down, and that was the end of the bear cub chapter.
We have seen many signs, including the consumed remains of fish, so there are surely some bears at Ashley.

POOR ROAD CONDITIONS AT ASHLEY -- mt. biker, 13:06:37 09/21/03 Sun
What is wrong with the water department? They generally do a great job in keeping up the roads at Ashley but as of late they've been using a grade of traprock that's really too course for biking or hiking. Then there's those huge stones they included on the fill on the side road by the sandpit. Where are their brains? As a suggestion I think they should place that fine trap on the long causeway road.
BTW Where is everyone?
