Subject: 1997 Mercury Sable valve body/transmission problem

Hello - I'm wondering if someone here might be able to help me out?

The car in question is a 1997 Mercury Sable, 3.0 L engine, with 144 000 km. It has been idling high (fluctuating around 1300 RPM) when starting cold in the morning, and stalling repeatedly when attempting to put it into drive. Only after letting it run for about 15 minutes is it able to be put into drive. It continues to idle high when driving.

A mechanic has given his opinion that the transmission is fine, but that repairs need to be made to the valve body, to the tune of $1500 - $1700. The question is, how long can this car safely be driven (before doing the repairs to the valve body) without damage occuring to the transmission? Would damage be more likely to occur at highway speeds (i.e. 100 kph), or would it be safer to stick to a route with a lower speed limit? Thanks for your advice.
