There, across the path, stood an unsuspecting doe, her head buried among the tall reeds and grasses that lined the marshy land. The winds quested from the west and surrendered to the lone range a slight reprieve from the heat that rose from the humid depths of muddy soil, carrying upon it the scent of fresh foliage and pine. The birds sang their typical symphony and serenaded all those that traveled there, touching a pair of silver entrenched structures with a sweet melody. The cicadas create the harmony and lifted their voices above those of the sweat-voiced aviaries. It was all perfectly deceptive how such tranquillity could exist in a land where so much killing took place.

A lone female crept through the darkness cast by the trees, every muscle pulled by the strings with tension. She moved in silence, her broad paws not even snapping so much as a single twig or crunching a leaf as she carefully maneuvered through the confusion of gnarled branches and shrubs. She kept down wind so that the breeze blew the deer’s scent towards her and not the other way around. Her midnight hued pelt blended perfectly with the dense foliage as she moved along the doe’s flank, she crouching down low so that her stomach barely hovered over the grasses. Mud sunk into the spaces between her toes and clung to her ebon coat, but Nychta didn’t really care. She was hungry...and she wanted to hunt...
