Hello PH;

It sounds like your Speed Sensor is bad.

I recently posted a couple replies for "Jonathan" under the previous subject "Accord EX 1991, S light blinking with ECU code 4", below.

So I don't have to retype...Check them out. They have a URL link to a webpage that has a good description of the Speed Sensor, as well as location and how to replace it. I also provided a URL to a link for a supplier off eBay, where I purchaced an aftermarket replacement sensor for $57.

Also, you can check the codes on your ECU (check engine light) and the A/T Control Unit ("S" light), by shorting out the test plug and turning the ignition switch on (without starting the engine). The test plug is located under the dash on the passenger side. It's usually up in the right corner, and may be just behind the plastic kick panel. It's usually a blue connector with two wires (ORN/WHT and GRN/WHT) that is hanging loose. If you get a small jumper wire, and short the two pins together in the connector, then turn the ignition switch on, the fault codes from the A/T Control Unit will be displayed by the "S" light blinking. The fault codes from the ECU will be displayed by the "Check Engine" light blinking. One long blink equals 10, one short blink equals 1.

For a speed sensor problem, the A/T Control Unit will return a fault code 4, and the ECU will return a fault code 17.

If these codes are displayed for you, it's probably the speed sensor (not the mechanical portion which bolts into the transmission and has 2 power steering hoses attached, but the electronic portion on top). Although it could be bad wiring, or a loose connector, it's more likely to be the sensor itself.

Good luck...Let us know how it turns out.

Mike
