My '91 Accord LX has 136K mileage on it which runs great until early this week. It was an early morning with a little lower temperature. The special "S" light went on and off when I was driving on local, and my car jerked at 2nd to 3rd gear. It was even worse when I came up to freeway. It speeded up to 4000 rpms and could not shift to upper gear. So, I pulled over and continued on feeder at a 40mph or so. It had an abnormal noise because of the tranmission seemed wrong.
However, after a couple of hours parking under the Sun, the "S" light does not go on during drive anymore. The only thing the I feel abnormal is the tranmission is not as smooth as before. Most of time it needs to reach 3rpms to gear up rather than 2.5 rpms or so in the past.
I went to my mechanics and I was told that the tranny oil change and flush won't help in this case and suggested to replace a used transmission at the price of $750.
Does anyone have the similar problem? What is the cheaper solution? Is there something called "transmission control unit" useful in my case? How much does this unit cost?
I still need my 91 Accord for another year. Please advise! Thanks
